boise, idaho -- Old Idaho Penitentiary State Historic Site was a functional prison from 1872 to 1973. the territory was seven years old when the prison was built, a full two decades before statehood. the gardens on the prison grounds, inside the walls, were planted and tended by inmates. it seem so incongruous to be walking in such a hardened, dreary set of buildings that housed some evil souls and yet to find such soft and beautiful plants growing inspite of it all.
