grand glacial grounds ...
glaciers, also known as “rivers of ice,” actually flow. glaciers flow primarily because the ice within them deforms under the influence of gravity. glacier flow is achieved by three mechanisms: internal deformation, basal sliding, and subglacial bed deformation. internal deformation is achieved by the processes of ice creep, large-scale folding, and faulting. this scene is looking across the mendenhall glacier flow stream, a thirteen-mile-long river of ice, which terminates on the far side of Mendenhall Lake, with blue icebergs floating in the water amidst reflections of southeast Alaska’s coast mountains. the actual glacier is off screen to the right. The Mendenhall Glacier is one of many major glaciers that connect to the vast Juneau Ice Field, a 1,500 square mile remnant of the last ice age, cradled high in the coast mountain’s lofty peaks.
